Trans-African Conservation

LETTER OF REFERENCE

Dr GC Dry

I support the Texas-based Trans-African Conservation Domestic Nonprofit Corporation`s stated objectives, given its alignment with private wildlife ranching in South Africa. Furthermore, its objectives are congruent with the Game Ranchers Forum`s (Pty) Limited mission to:

  • Promote wildlife through private ownership instead of public ownership
  • Sustainable use of wildlife is the only vehicle to ensure the growth of biodiversity and the protection of wildlife.
  • Maintaining an NPO that focuses on providing animal welfare services in the private wildlife sector.
  • These sectors focus on tribal, community, commercial, and small family-owned enterprises that primarily rely on sustainable wildlife utilization for their survival.

Private game ranchers in South Africa believe in private ownership of wild animals. Wild animals should not be confused with “wildlife” or in the “wild”. Wild animals may be on state-controlled conservation areas, semi-extensive to extensive game ranches, private wildlife conservancies, private game reserves, and communal trust land. Wildlife refers to animals that were historically only found in the “wild” and are presently an economic asset owned and utilized by the rancher, hunters, eco-tourists, and game meat production.

Wildlife on game ranches is managed in a regime ensuring sustainable use and economic GDP growth. This refers to wild animals that include managed and intensively bred animals, but not to domesticate a species.

More than 90% of all game ranches are wildlife agro-processing enterprises on semi-extensive and extensive ranches, and the rest operate as private wildlife conservancies. The ranching intent of the sector is that game animals are semi-wild, of which a small number could be intensively bred, but not domesticated. Private wildlife is the biggest contributor to the biodiversity economy (average 10% annual SA GDP growth over the last 15 years, with successful restoration of biodiverse habitats.

Where We Operate

We are active in key conservation areas across Africa and the world, working with private landowners, community conservancies, and regional partners to drive impact where it matters most.

At חופש, we believe conservation is not a luxury

The world’s natural ecosystems face growing threats from habitat loss, climate change, illegal wildlife trade, and human-wildlife conflict. These challenges not only endanger species but also threaten the livelihoods and heritage of the people who rely on these ecosystems.

Conservation is not just about protecting wildlife — it’s about preserving the ecological systems that sustain life, culture, and economic resilience. Our work ensures that future generations inherit a thriving natural world, where wildlife and people can coexist and prosper.

An NGO working to conserve and protect the world’s wildlife and restore the freedom of wild spaces.
